Day 6: Nothing to Write About?

Every Monday morning, my first graders' morning work is to write about their weekend in their Weekend News Journal. I hear very often, though honestly, not as often as I have in previous years, "I didn't do anything this weekend. I don't know what to write about." I always laugh and respond, "So what did you do this weekend, just sit on your bed and stare at the ceiling all weekend?"

While I had plenty going on in my life on Friday and Saturday, today was a day that I literally did nothing. I'm having a really hard time thinking of a topic to write about for my Slice of Life post. So, here it is, my post about nothing. I'm sure nobody wants to read about how I slept in, watched television and read a book all day. But let me tell you, it was awesome to have the time to do that. I'm sure that when I am driving to work tomorrow morning I will regret that decision, but for now I am going to enjoy the rest of my night of doing nothing.

  1. Not just you but I do that too. So many list of things to do but there are days where you just feel like doing nothing from your list. I am a morning person but love to be under the sheets even when I am wide awake. Savour the time left of doing nothing but just staring at the ceiling!

  2. Caroline, your post was about so much, and I could totally relate! When my students say they did nothing over the weekend, or have nothing to write about, I also prompt them with a funny comment like yours, and sometimes it helps them come up with something. That said, participating in this writing challenge has helped me see that sometimes it isn't that I have nothing to write about. Sometimes it's that I have too much to write about, and I can't seem to narrow it. And, sometimes it's that I don't want to write about the topics that come to mind. And sometimes, I think I just don't want to write, and the discipline of having to means that I have to face that blank screen and do it anyway. So, I relate to my students, and I relate to you! Thanks for writing about nothing!
